Canada’s biggest energy companies have a lot in common with each other
The Vancouver-based energy company Energy Management (EMI) has its own name and logo.
And it does so in the form of a giant black and white sign, emblazoned with the word energy management, as well as a red and white symbol of a company logo.
This is not an uncommon sight in the world of energy companies.
For example, ExxonMobil (XOM) and Chevron have similar logos, and some big names in the US and Europe have their own distinctive logo.
“It’s really interesting to see how common the word ‘energy management’ is in a company’s name,” says Ryan Miller, senior vice president of energy operations at EMI.
The logo itself is a bit odd.
It’s not the typical logo for a large energy company.
It uses a red background, a large horizontal arrow, and an upward-facing circle.
That design has been used for a long time in energy products, like petroleum and liquefied natural gas (LNG).
The vertical lines of the logo indicate that it is a logo, not a branding tool, Miller explains.
But it’s a logo nonetheless, and Miller says that it’s still recognizable by most people who are familiar with energy companies today.
“Energy management is very much the domain of the energy industry, and I think it’s important to recognize that there’s a lot of overlap in how energy companies think about themselves,” he says.
Miller points to the example of EMI’s energy product portfolio, which is made up of different products and services from different industries.
He explains that the company uses a number of different branding tools in its portfolio to differentiate its products.
“One of the key tools that we use is the logo,” he explains.
Miller says there are many different brands in the energy sector today, and he believes that they are often confused with one another. “
The energy industry is a very diverse industry, so you have the oil and gas industry, you have energy efficiency, you’ve got renewable energy, you can do energy conservation, you might even have a utility.”
Miller says there are many different brands in the energy sector today, and he believes that they are often confused with one another.
“For example, when we use a brand like Mobil Oil or Chevron, we are all the same brand, so we’re all a little bit like one another,” he adds.
Miller says the term “energy management” is used to describe different businesses, and the different business models they offer, but he also says that he doesn’t think that the term is necessarily an accurate term for energy companies anymore.
“I think the term ‘energy manager’ is still a very useful and common label, because there are so many different businesses that are operating,” he continues.
“They’re all very different businesses and all are trying to do the same thing.””
But I think that when you think about energy management today, we’re kind of lumping all these different businesses together under one umbrella,” he concludes.
“They’re all very different businesses and all are trying to do the same thing.”
